More Information About Our Saunas

Traditional vs Infrared Sauna

The idea of using heat to cleanse and relax finds its roots in Finnish tradition, where early Finns would make fires in huts or caves to create a soothing, steamy environment. This practice eventually evolved into the modern sauna, a staple of Finnish culture celebrated for its therapeutic and social benefits. While professional saunas today provide a relaxing experience, the health benefits of an infrared sauna are increasingly recognised as superior.

THE MAIN DIFFERENCE

In a traditional sauna, the temperature is
elevated to around 90°C. To make this intense
heat tolerable, water is used to create steam. An
infrared sauna, however, operates differently.
Instead of heating the air, infrared rays warm
your body directly, allowing for a much lower
temperature of about 55°C. This creates a
comfortable experience while still being hot
enough to sweat out toxins.

THE BENEFITS

The benefits of a Discovery Products Infrared
Sauna are exceptional:

➡️ Lower Temperature: Operates at 45-60°C
(113-140°F), providing a more comfortable
environment.

➡️ Direct Heating: Uses infrared rays to heat
the body directly, leading to deeper tissue
penetration.

➡️ Increased Sweat Production: Can induce
2-3 times more sweating compared to
traditional saunas, enhancing detoxification.

➡️ Energy Efficiency: Consumes less energy
due to lower operating temperatures, making
it more cost-effective.

➡️ Quick Heat-Up Time: Heats up faster,
usually within 10-15 minutes, allowing for
immediate use.

➡️ Comfort and Tolerance: More comfortable
for extended sessions due to lower
temperatures and dry air.

➡️ Therapeutic Benefits: Infrared rays at
specific wavelengths provide targeted pain
relief and can improve skin tone.

What Is Infrared Light?

Infrared radiation is a type of light that falls outside the visible light spectrum, meaning we can’t visibly see it. There are 2 forms of infrared radiation, one that we feel directly as heat and another that has no tangible heat but emits infrared energy which causes the body to heat itself. It’s this form of heat transfer that makes a Discovery Products sauna so unique.

THE INFRARED SPECTRUM

Infrared radiation has wavelengths longer than those of visible light, ranging from around 700
nanometres (nm) to 1 millimetre (mm). It’s worth noting that within the infrared spectrum, there are
different categories:
Near-infrared (NIR): This is closest to the visible spectrum and is often used in applications
like remote controls and optical communications.

1. Mid-infrared (MIR): This range is often associated with thermal imaging and sensing
applications, where heat signatures are detected.

2. Far-infrared (FIR): This range is closer to microwaves and is used in applications like night
vision and astronomy.

THE MEDICAL FIELD

Infrared rays aren’t limited to alternative medicine. Since the 1960s, infrared light has been utilized
in various medical applications, such as maintaining warmth for babies in incubators, aiding physiotherapists in muscle injury recovery, and offering advanced beauty treatments for clients.

Benefits of Infrared light across different wavelengths

Infrared light, a type of electromagnetic radiation, offers various health and wellness benefits
depending on its wavelength. Spanning near, mid, and far-infrared spectrums, each wavelength penetrates the skin at different depths, providing distinct therapeutic effects.

NEAR INFRARED (NIR)

Shortest infrared
wavelength.

Penetrates the skin’s
epidermis layer to remove
toxins such as dead skin
cells, oils, dirt & bacteria.

Stimulates collagen and
elastin production.

Reduces the appearance
of fine lines and wrinkles.

Promotes skin renewal,
cell health & tissue growth.

MID INFRARED (MIR)

Longer wavelength that
can penetrate deeper into
the body’ soft tissue where
inflammation occurs.

Helps expand blood
vessels & increases
circulation so more oxygen
can reach injured parts of
the body.

Stimulates the
cardiovascular system.

Helps your body burn
calories and supports
healthy weight loss.

FAR INFRARED (FIR)

Longest wavelength in the
infrared spectrum.

Reaches deep into the
body where toxins are
stored.

Stimulates sweat glands
through direct heat,
resulting in a deep &
detoxifying sweat.

Heats your body from the
inside to expel toxins like
heavy metals from deep
down.

How Does Infrared Heat Affect The Body?

Infrared light, spanning wavelengths from 750 to 10,000 nanometers, plays a key role in determining whether it provides a true therapeutic benefit or just a ‘feel good’ effect.

YOUR BODY WARMS UP

When you step into a Discovery Products infrared sauna, infrared heat penetrates deep into your body’s cells, setting cellular molecules in motion. This movement generates heat both within and around your body. Unlike a traditional sauna, where the air around you is heated, infrared rays directly warm your
body without significantly raising the temperature of the surrounding air.

YOUR BODY COOLS DOWN

As your body works to release this heat, you begin to sweat, losing water along with toxins—approximately 80% water and 20% waste products. But that’s not all. The cooling process itself requires energy, which means you’re burning calories effortlessly, without feeling fatigued afterward!

While you relax, your body is hard at work—your heart rate increases and blood circulation is enhanced both internally and at the surface, similar to the effects of a brisk 30-minute walk.

The health benefits of a Discovery Products infrared sauna are extensive, offering everything from detoxification to cardiovascular exercise.

Steps To A Perfect Sauna Experience

1. PREPARATION

Hydrate: Drink plenty of water before your session to stay hydrated, as you’ll lose fluids through sweating. Set the Temperature: Preheat the sauna to your desired temperature, usually
between 110°F and 140°F (43°C to 60°C). Beginners might start lower, around 100°F (38°C).
Time Selection: Plan for a session lasting 20-45 minutes. Beginners should start with shorter sessions and gradually increase the time as they become accustomed to the heat.
Clothing: Dress lightly or use a towel. Loose, breathable clothing or simply a towel allows the infrared heat to penetrate
more effectively.

2. STARTING THE SESSION

Warm-Up: Enter the sauna once it has reached the desired temperature. Sit or lie down comfortably, allowing your body to adjust to the heat gradually.
Relaxation: Use the time to meditate, listen to soothing music, or practice deep breathing exercises to enhance relaxation.

3. DURING THE SESSION

Monitor Your Body: Pay attention to how your body feels. If you start feeling lightheaded, dizzy, or uncomfortable, exit the sauna immediately.
Sweating: As your body warms up, you’ll start to sweat. This is a natural part of the detox process, helping to remove toxins and impurities from your body.
Hydration: Sip on water or an electrolyte drink throughout the session to stay hydrated.

4. ENDING THE SESSION

Cool Down: When your session is complete, step out of the sauna and allow
your body to cool down gradually. Avoid cold showers immediately after; instead, let your body return to a normal temperature naturally.
Rehydrate: Drink plenty of water post session to replenish the fluids lost during sweating.
Rest: Allow your body to relax and recover. Lie down or sit quietly for a few minutes after your session to maximise
the benefits.

5. POST SAUNA CARE

Shower: After cooling down, take a warm shower to cleanse your skin of the sweat and toxins released during the session.
Moisturise: Apply a hydrating lotion or oil to keep your skin moisturised, as sweating can sometimes dry out your skin.
Frequency: Use the infrared sauna regularly, about 3-4 times per week, to enjoy the long-term health benefits. Beginners may start with fewer sessions per week and increase as their body adapts.
